Formula
The formula is displayed so the result can be checked independently. PreBreakout does not use a hidden scoring model on this page.
Worked hypothetical example
For a hypothetical long position of 100 units entered at 100 with a stop at 95, exiting 40 at 105, 30 at 110 and 20 at 115 closes 90 units at a weighted exit of 108.89. Gross realized P/L is +800; after 5 of entered costs it is +795, equal to about +1.77R on the exited quantity, with 10 units still open.
Important: the numbers are fictional and are not associated with a security, issuer or current market price.
What this calculator does not tell you
- Exit quantities may sum to less than the original quantity; the remainder is reported as still open and is not assigned an unrealized profit or loss.
- Realized R divides net realized P/L by the initial stop risk attached to the quantity already exited. It does not score the quality of the exit plan.
- Entered costs are subtracted once from realized P/L. Taxes, financing, future exits and execution beyond the values entered remain outside the model.
- The calculator accepts profitable or losing partial exits; it does not require targets to progress in one direction.
Scale out without pretending the remainder is closed
A partial exit changes only the quantity that has actually been modeled as closed. PreBreakout keeps the remaining quantity separate instead of assigning it a future target or current market value. That makes the result usable for both completed journals and hypothetical plans without silently forecasting the runner.
Why weighted exit price matters
Two exit plans can close the same total quantity at the same three prices and still have different realized outcomes if the quantities are distributed differently. Weighted exit price preserves those weights; a simple average of the three exit prices does not.
Realized R uses the exited quantity only
The R result compares net realized P/L with the initial entry-to-stop risk on the quantity already closed. The original full-position risk is shown separately so the two denominators are not confused.
Worked scale-out breakdown
| Leg | Quantity | Exit | Gross P/L from entry 100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 40 | 105 | +200 |
| 2 | 30 | 110 | +300 |
| 3 | 20 | 115 | +300 |
| Open remainder | 10 | — | Not realized |
How to use it for learning
Change one input or observation at a time and check how the output changes. The page reports only deterministic arithmetic from your inputs; it does not convert the result into a quality score, forecast or trading instruction.
